Fun Jar Activity: make shiny pennies. Soak in 2 Tbsp vinegar and 2 tsp salt.
A closer look at our coins. I was curious if it would work on non-penny coins.
Rinse and … looking pretty shiny, except for that stubborn one.
After a few hours we came back and looked at them. They were turning green. This took me by surprise but then from the recesses of my brain I seemed to recall something about oxidation. I looked it up and how to get rid of it … clean in vinegar and salt. Hmmm, that seems to be what caused it on our coins. Maybe it was the water rinsing? After another hour or so the pennies were looking as dark and dirty as before the experience. I don’t have the motivation to figure out any more from there and the kids don’t either so that’s good enough for us. How long will we keep pennies in circulation anyway?
